How Your Domain Name Can Make or Break Your Website

Posted by on 16 January 2013.

Before you can actually start building a website for yourself or your business, you need to first purchase a domain name.

What most people fail to really understand is the importance of a domain name. A domain name is inherently linked to the identity of their website, and plays a part in your search engine rankings as well. For instance, if you have a business of selling certain types of product, the domain name that you buy has to be linked with the name of your company and/or the nature of your business. An attractive and easy-to-remember domain name can in itself be used as a powerful marketing tool.

What Are Domain Names?

In essence, a domain name is an easily remembered version of IP addresses, which represent the addresses of computers on the Internet. IP addresses can be defined as simply a series of numerical strings that are divided with periods. In technical terms, a domain name serves as an address for a computer network but in layman terms, it is the address that a user types into his or her browser’s address bar to access a website. In order for a website to exist on the Web and be accessible globally, it has to have a registered domain name.

Domain names are purchased on a lease basis. Therefore, a particular person can purchase a domain name for a certain period of time, after which if he or she chooses to retain the domain, the lease extension has to be paid for.

Before you can actually log onto the Internet and purchase a domain name, you will have to check whether it is available. There are also certain rules that you need to bear in mind.

Creating a Domain Name

As has been mentioned above, a domain name can consist of alphanumeric characters. Although domain names can be very long, it is recommended that a domain name is as short and consise as possible, in order to make it easy for people to remember it. Just as the address and name of a physical shop should be easy to remember, the domain name should also be easy to remember because it’s the address of your website.

It is also wise to remember that domain names are not case sensitive. Therefore, using ‘A’ or ‘a’ will not make a difference. However, certain people tend to formulate domain names using a mixture of capital letters because it can be easier to remember.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search Engine Optimization is a fairly new concept in digital marketing. Nowadays, you can hire an SEO expert to revamp your website and to use certain techniques that will increase your rankings on search engines. The formula in itself is quite simple. The more visible you are on a search engine, the more traffic you will be able to attract. What most people are not aware of is the fact that by adding the right keywords within a domain name, you can improve your rankings on search results too.

The process of choosing and registering a domain name should be done after serious contemplation and planning. Don’t rush into it, but when you do find a domain name that you like, grab it, because you don’t want it to slip through your fingers!
